Upcoming iOS Update to Enhance iPhone Security, Increasing Resistance to Unauthorized Access..
apple is set to introduce an enhanced security measure named Stolen Device Protection in the upcoming iOS 17.3 update, slated for release next week. This feature is designed to significantly bolster protection against potential phone theft and unauthorized access to sensitive Apple ID and financial information stored on the device. Currently, a lock screen passcode provides access to or modification of personal and financial data; however, with the impending update, thieves will be required to use Face ID or Touch ID. Moreover, a waiting period of up to an hour may be implemented for certain changes.
Although Apple has not specified the exact release date for this feature, it has been undergoing testing in the 17.3 beta version since December. The introduction of this security enhancement addresses a notable vulnerability highlighted in a Wall Street Journal report from February 2023. The report exposed a security loophole where thieves could exploit the memorized lock screen passcode to lock victims out of their Apple ID, which, in turn, could lead to a reset of the password using the same passcode.
